Rock Fish

The easiest and hardest part of the day. Depending what day it is.

Most of you know the story…”they were biting faster then the captain could bring the boat” type of bites. That is a common occurrence and is the best way to finish off a good day of ocean fishing. The Pelegic rock fish like black Sea bass, Yellow tail, dusky all love to swim in schools and hang on structure. Thus when your in them you can usually turn on the circus music and pretend ‘sa capt” that you can keep up with everything. However there are those days…when they are just finicky biters and it can be the hardest part of the day…MAKING fish. None the less we like to consider it a bonus part of the day and always remind folks of the option when they are looking at letting ANOTHER halibut go looking for the Whopper…Just not always time well spent…however you like to play is fine by us.

The Non Pelagic such as China, Quill back and Yellow eye are often caught in areas while we are halibut fishing. More often then not (in some areas) we see the Non Pelagic come over and bite the Halibut gear and make a bonus catch out of it. We generally do not target them as a active fishery …It is not a smart idea to rig your boat to drift…for fish that are hiding in rocks and reefs with light tackle.

Generally you are allowed 1NON-Pelagic rock (mostly on the bottom) fish a day and only 1 yellow eye a year.

For the Pelgic fish your allowed 5 a day no annual limit.

All of the rock fish are a wonderful addition to round out your catch. The variety and texture always add to the experience and taste when you get your “Seafood from the source.”
